The flat land on top hill

October 1997 - Year 2
Upland rice, maize and bamboo with the cottage in the background.
Joy, my friend, grows upland rice, because of the uncertain prices of cassava on the world market. The price fluctuates from 0.7 to 1.4 baht/kg. (1 US$ = app. 44 baht in 2002). The maize will be mature before the rice.
April 1998 - year 3:
After the first rain the field is plowed. For parts of the land for the last time, order to compare how many wild tree species will survive. The part which was only hand weeded of course gave the biggest output, but hand weeding is time consuming and therefore expensive.
May 1998 - Year 3
After the first rain trees were planted. Mostly non-fruit trees, which were given by the by the local forestry department: Bamboo in a 3rd circle (phai luak), ton diin pet (for shade), mai prado (hardwood), eucalyptus (in the fence), kratin theepaa (for firewood), teak etc. All kind of fruit-trees, which were planted in between for self-consumption and as experiment to see which species can grow in the area. The fruit-trees were irrigated in the next dry season. After that they were left to survive or die.
August 1998 - Year 3:
Beans and cassava were planted between the saplings.
Beans for self-consumption and because of their nitrogen fixating roots.
The cassava is a special sweet sort (man haa naa-thii), which can fetch a price of 5 baht/kilo (five times as much as the tapioca, which is exported for animal food).
February 1999 - Year 4
From the cottage towards the bamboo.
The wild trees in the area, which has been hand weeded have now grown to a height of 3-5 meters. The NE horizon has disappeared.
